VOLUNTEER CLEARANCE
Every adult who volunteers on an NUSD campus or with NUSD students must complete a clearance process before beginning their role. There are two levels of clearance, based on how much direct, unsupervised interaction a volunteer has with students. Please review both levels below to find the one that matches your volunteer role.
LEVEL 1 Basic Clearance
For classroom volunteers and other on-campus volunteers who are directly supervised by NUSD staff at all times.
• Government-Issued ID verified through the Megan’s Law website
• Mandated Reporter Training (click link for instructions) – Beginning 7/1/26 all volunteers must complete the State of California’s Mandated Reporter training course for volunteers (CA SB 848). This is an annual requirement.
• TB Clearance Verification
Common Examples: Classroom parent helpers, one time campus volunteers, community volunteers, field trip chaperones
LEVEL 2 Extended Clearance
For volunteers who interact with students under the supervision of NUSD staff in program-related roles, includingdriving field trip chaperones(including overnight trips), athletic volunteers, and regular campus volunteers. Level 2 clearance also covers all Level 1 activities.
• Government-Issued ID verified through the Megan’s Law website
• Mandated Reporter Training (click link for instructions) – Beginning 7/1/26 all volunteers must complete the State of California’s Mandated Reporter training course for volunteers (CA SB 848). This is an annual requirement.
• Live Scan Fingerprints (DOJ and FBI background check)
If transporting students:
• Vehicle Inspection (must be conducted by the school site within 5-7 days of the field trip)
• Proof of a valid driver’s license and proof of qualifying automobile insurance meeting District minimum coverage requirements (must be verified by the school site within 5-7 days of the field trip)
Common Examples: After-school program volunteers, overnight field trip chaperones.
Not Sure Which Level You Need?
Ask yourself: will I ever be alone with, or responsible for supervising, students without an NUSD staff member present (for example, on an overnight trip or as a coach)?
• If no — you likely need Level 1: Basic Clearance.
• If yes — you likely need Level 2: Extended Clearance.
